Abstract - Granular flow of individual pellets in the solids conveying zone of single screw extrusion is studied. Traditional analyses of the solids conveying stage assume the movement of an elastic solid plug, being the existing relative movement of the solids, neglected. In order to consider, in the mathematical analysis, a more realistic approach and, simultaneously, the relations between barrel, pellet properties and screw geometry, a numerical model based on Discrete Element Method (DEM) was applied. This work gives some emphasis to the role of the coefficient of friction in the solids transport along the screw channel. The computational study performed take into account the structural behaviour of the plug, by computing the volume fraction during the filling of the screw, and the dynamical behaviour of the plug formed, by computing the cross- and down channel velocities along of the channel, the output rate and the Residence Time Distribution. The results obtained showed that the friction coefficient does not have an important role in the structural behaviour of the plug, but it has influence in the dynamical behaviour of the plug formed during the transport.
