GENERAL INFORMATION FOR TOURISTS

LANGUAGE
Spanish is the official language. In hotels and shopping centers English and
other languages (Italian, Portuguese, German) are also spoken due to the great
numbers of immigrants that the country has received.
POLITICAL SYSTEM
Venezuela is a representative democratic republic.
FOLKLORE
Due to the characteristics of the different regions, Venezuela has a rich i
folklore.
The coast region is famous for its dances to the beat of drums, the Plains
for its costumes and dances, the West for the religious rituals of the Andean
mountain region. The visitor can be easily and agreeably made captive by the
music,
rhythm and color of the landscape.
RESTAURANTS
Caracas is a gastronomical city, with an abundance of Creole, Spanish, Italian,
French, Greek, Arab, Chinese and Swiss restaurants, among others. Surely you
will be able to find the cuisine of your preference.
CURRENCY
The monetary unit is the Bolivar (Bs.). Dollars, as well as international creditcards, are accepted in hotels, restaurants and shops. On April 1st, the rate of
exchange was Bs.495 for one U.S. Dollar.
UTILITIES
The electrical current used in Venezuela is 110 V and 60 Hz.
TOURIST ACTIVITIES
Several tours are available before and after workshop. Information details will

COLONIAL AND MODERN CARACAS
Places to visit: Casa Natal del Libertador (Simon Bolívar's birthplace),
Plaza Boliívar, the Cathedral, Capitolio (houses the National Congress),
Bolivarian Museum, Contemporary
Art Museum, Teresa Carreiño Theatre. Also you can take a tour to main
residencial and
shopping areas in Metropolitan Caracas.
COLONIA TOVAR
A small village, close to Caracas, which was founded in mid-nineteenth century
by german immigrants from the Black Forest, and where the architecture and the
traditions of that german region have been preserved. Enjoy the landscape, the
mountain climate and an excellent lunch. A visit to pottery shops is
recommended.
LOS ROQUES ARCHIPIELAGO
A natural paradise made up of islands of extraordinary beauty, with beautiful
white sand beaches and clear water lagoons. Must be reached by air, and
reservations should be made well in advance.
PUERTO LA CRUZ
A city with spectacular beaches, beautiful scenery, modern hotels, restaurants
and a festive nigth life. A one-day tour to Mochima National Park is highly
recommended.
CANAIMA AND ANGEL FALLS
A place of marvellous experiences in the luxuriant nature of Amazon Jungle,
with its large rivers and the awesome Angel Falls, the highest in the world.
Must be reached by air, and reservations should be made well in advance.
AMAZON JUNGLE
Primitive nature, incredible waterfalls, powerful cataracts and imposing rivers
are characteristics of the landscape south of the Orinoco river. Visiting them
is a thrilling and unforgettable experience. Must be reached by air, and reser
vations should be made in advance.
MERIDA
A charming city situated among the mountains of the Andean Mountain Range, with
its serene and surrounded by typical villages and peaks of great height. The
world's highest cablecar will take you to Espejo Peak, in the Sierra Nevada.
