Resumen: On July 4th 2012, the ATLAS and CMS experiments have claimed the observation of a new particle consistent with the Standard Model Higgs boson.
This particle plays a very specific role within the Standard Model and has been searched for during the last four decades. I will explain why the Higgs boson is so important in particle physics and how its discovery was made possible by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) located at CERN on the French-Swiss border. I will present the ATLAS and CMS detectors, which collected the LHC data, and I will give an insight to the data analysis done by thousands of scientists of both collaborations, among of them French and Venezuelans. I will finally discuss the large field of investigations opened by the discovery.
